Well call me slow, call me busy…but I FInally got around to watching a great flick on the Manchester (Madchester as it was called..) Club scene (1972-92) called 24 Hour Party People. If you’re interested in learning about the music movement pre-Brit pop this is your PERfect opportunity.

Covers the story by Manchester’s TV personality Tony Wilson who, along with, Joy Division (and New Order) started Factory Records and opened the famous La Hacienda Club. (see pics below from my Manchester 07 trip where, lucky me, there was a museum exhibition on La Hacienda)

Focus is on the growth of the Manchester scene (Happy Mondays, Joy Division/New Order), the cohesion and explosive timing of the punk movement in this one city, the drugs, the ups/downs, and the ultimate demise of Ian Curtis (lead singer Joy Division) and La Hacienda.

Interestingly narrated by the lead character and true life person – Tony Wilson, who i learnt today, died in 2007 from kidney related cancer. A shame. Thank you Tony and New Order, for some wonderful music.

DVD 2 (strangely) is where you want to start! It oulines Genesis from their beginning (no pun intended!) with Peter Gabriel.
DVD 1 Covers where Phil Collins steps in.

What makes this set different from what you might’ve already seen/know about Genesis?
1) their very early career live close-up concert clips
2) the level of detail on the early stages of their development
3) some insightful comments by *some* of the interviews (though one guy interviewee I could’ve *sworn* was a woman….turns out no! Weird)

..and what can i say…Gabriel’s always hilarious to watch prance around in his crazy outfits and make-up! (ahhh those introverts…)

Rewatching DVD “Live Forever” 2003. Director: John Dower

One word: Excellent.

Recap: Deconstructs the rise, fall, rise of britpop in the 90s, and its symbiotic relationship with Britain’s pop culture & youth, and its influence on England’s national politics (eg,Thatcherism, New Labour, ‘Cool Britannica’). Special focus on Oasis-Blur catfight for #1 spot, including the mass media’s influence. Great interviews & great DVD extras too (won’t even bother describing, just watch this puppy).

PS: Noel’s arrogance in interviews will have you die laughing or staring blankly in disbelief. To give you an idea …(fyi: you’ll notice lead singer Noel’s not big on his brother/guitarist Liam) http://thinkexist.com/quotes/noel_gallagher/

Glastonbury Live – a 2 set DVD compiliation – great moments of this 30(?) year annual festival in England on British pop, rock, folk music of its day. I”m only part way thru but a great watch. Highly recommend already!
warning: there is some non-British bands on this DVD (ha. yeah, i kill myself). ..Anyways, try not to let it corrupt you. ) You’ve been warned!
http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/news.aspx?id=187

——

Part II

Update on Glastonbury DVD Set: Finished it Finally! 2006. Directed by Julien Temple.

DVD 1: A retro of 30yrs of Glasto. Early days (and the noble intentions…) of its instigator and a few thousand participants, to the later years of gatecrashers (the world is full of crashing bores..ha..ok, inside Moz joke) bringing attendance into the 100′s of thousands. Great clips of bands performing. Overall, great fun. It’s even better than I thought it was.. wanna go even more than i did before now!

DVD 2: So-So. It’s interviews with some artists, the creator, and some stupidly drunk spectators. This could’ve been better.
