A side note:

Comparing some White Lies and Friendly Fires interview responses was interesting…eg, for Ed (Friendly Fires) catchy hooks is important, whereas Charles of White Lies sees hooks as rather short sighted road to creating music. I think both bands are talented, and are successful in their own rights.

Catchy hooks are great for their fun, and sometimes intentional lack of depth. This music is needed as a release, as a ‘joy’, and for something to sing along to, just as much as lyrics/music from a band like White Lies are needed for their full, complex sounds & lyrics & storylines. Thanks to them for including a 20piece orchestra for its beauty and richness, while thanks to Friendly Fires for the samba-ing and jangly beats..making us feel, on a few songs, that we’ve all flown to Rio for a few minutes.

So, unless your criteria is ‘longevity’ — who’s to say what’s better? Enjoy…
